State Description
Don't let Connecticut's size fool you into underestimating its role as a political and culture powerhouse. Situated as a crossroads between New York City and Boston, CT's history is rich and its allure is strong. Southwestern Connecticut presents a unique combination of pretty towns, village greens, and the elaborate estates of the rich and famous who have fled Manhattan. That metropolitan influence is felt as far north as New Haven and the hallowed Ivy League halls of Yale University, where there are always concerts, plays and other fascinating events to attend. However, further east along the shoreline, life takes on a calmer quality in places such as Old Saybrook, Mystic Seaport, and the beautiful lighthouses that dot the coast. Heading northwest, through hilly farmland and past the Connecticut River Valley, you'll find Hartford. Sure, you've probably heard it described as the insurance capital. It's true, the insurance industry is a vital part the economy, but Hartford is also rich in history. Be sure to visit the homes of Mark Train and Harriet Beecher Stowe in Hartford, as well as American's first public park. And if you're there for New Year's Eve, don't miss First Night. Northwestern CT is beautiful, unspoiled hill country with horse and flower farms. Of course, you'll glimpse the occasional helipad outside the estate of a corporate bigwig, but you can also hike along the Appalachian Trail or go rafting on one of the many rivers. And don't forget to visit in the fall, as the foliage is breathtaking. Each region of CT has a distinct personality, affording a great deal of variety in a small amount of space. There's much to offer here – whether you live in CT or are just passing through.
