The US Virgin Islands are made up three main islands (St Croix, St Thomas and St John) and many smaller islands. Throughout history, this tropical paradise has been held by many European nations, but during the First World War, the United States bought the islands from Denmark. Since then, the Caribbean islands known for their white sandy beaches have developed a unique culture. The people of the islands are literally from all over the world with large populations from the native Arawak Indians, Africa, England, India and the United States. What they all have in common is a love of the easy-going tropical lifestyle. St. Croix is the largest of the islands with two major cities, Christiansted and Frederiksted. In earlier years, the island's economy ran on sugar and rum, and you can visit some of the 54 sugar mills that still exist on the island today. Buck Island National Reef Monument, located off the coast of St Croix, is one of the most fantastic marine gardens in the Caribbean Sea. It is a perfect place for snorkeling or scuba diving. St Thomas, the second largest island, is home to the capital city and world-famous port of Charlotte Amalie. The cosmopolitan city is home to the best shopping, nightlife and fine dining in the islands. Magen's Bay on St Thomas is a beautiful stretch of white sandy beach and has been recognized by National Geographic as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. St John, the smallest of the three islands, is largely unspoiled. The tropical forests, isolated coves, and fantastic beaches are largely as they always were thanks to the Virgin Islands National Park that covers two-thirds of the island.
